Fashion That Doesn’t Go Out of Style

Fashion & Style

Fashion vs. Style – Which One Do You Choose?

Every year I await the upcoming fashion weeks. I spend hours watching videos, trying to get a glimpse of what my favorite designers have come up with. Yes, I amid, it makes me thirst for a new wardrobe, or at least for as many pieces as I can afford. As a result, I used to spend money buying some pieces, which were the latest creations, the trend, the fad, forgetting that the following year, the cycle would start all over again. For this reason,  let go of this pattern a long time ago because I learned to add classic items to my existing wardrobe.

“Fashion Fades, Style Remains” – Coco Chanel

Every Woman Needs This in Her Closet

Blazer

I love, love my blazers. They transform my outfit for the day into a stylish look. A well-made, tailored blazer is a necessity for me. It is a statement piece, the dot on the “i.” Remember not to button the blazer for a more casual look and to button only the top button for a more structured look. Sitting down the blazer should always be worn open.

Well-fitting Jeans

One closet staple that somehow evolves year after year. I get overwhelmed  buying jeans with so many styles around. Are you confused by all the choices out there? Try 501 Jeans. While Levi’s has produced the 501 for 145 years, certain features have evolved and changed.

T-shirts (white, black, and gray)

The main reason to keep your wardrobe well-stocked with plain tees is for the wide variety and versatility they add to your style. Ideal for layering in the colder months, chic and comfortable in warmer weather. The plain t-shirt can be a foundation piece for every style you come up with. One thing to remember (this is important to me) your white t-shirt should always look new, crisp and brilliant white.

Button-up White Blouse

Another core essential of my wardrobe. This type of blouse gives any style the  “WOW” effect. Made from linen, silk or cotton, it doesn’t matter. The blouse, a classic for decades will always work hard for you..Pairing it with pants and a blazer and you are styling. Add an awesome belt and some jewellery and you will be remembered…

Button-down Shirt

I always can I rely on my white and light blue button-down shirts and so can you. Tucked into jeans, sweater tied around the shoulder, and wearing your sneakers, you are ready to do almost anything, except maybe going to a black-tie affair.

Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere is the “Lux-Look” of knits. It’s a splurge, but it’s well worth the money you spend. It feels soft and exudes an exceptional warmth during the cold winter months. Layer it over a simple dress shirt for a more formal look. Or slip into your favorite jeans and tie a silk bandana around your neck. You are styling! While cashmere will not wear out or go out of style,  it might be damaged by washing it in your wash machine. Please don’t! It will not survive! The label instructs dry cleaning only. If you feel you need to wash it anyway, you must hand wash it.

Chanel Jacket

Coco Chanel, revolutionized the world of fashion in 1954 when she introduced the iconic Chanel jacket. Although inspired by Austrian men’s wear,  the jacket is a definite feminine and elegant piece of style. Wearing a Chanel jacket is one of the pleasures to be a woman.

Leather Jacket

Another essential for any wardrobe. If you need anything, you need a leather jacket because the styling of this jacket is endless. Style it with black pants, jeans, a pencil, or an A-line skirt. There is a reason that a leather jacket is a classic.

Trench Coat

Rain and wind? You need a trench coat. Trenches have a  wide cut, so you may layer your clothes underneath. I don’t need any rain or wind to wear my trench. I wear it with anything: Jeans, dress pants, leggings, and skirts. For a European look, tie the belt in the back.

Pencil Skirt

In the year 1954, Christian Dior revolutionized women’s fashion with the creation of the world’s first pencil skirt. The pencil skirt is one of the most timeless silhouettes in fashion. When I want to feel feminine, I put on one of my pencil skirts. The skirt is slim fitting and has a narrow cut. The slit on the back and sides have a particular function. These skirts were so tight that women hardly could walk; thus, the slit was added. Pair it with a white blouse or sweater and an impressive belt, high heels or ballerina flats.

A-Line Skirt

The pièce de résistance. A classic since Christian Dior introduced it in 1955. His A-line became an immediate hit and the most wanted silhouette of Paris.  For a super casual look for Sunday brunch, pair an A-line skirt with a basic tee and a pair of Keds, à la American pop singer Taylor Swift.

Black Tailored Pants

A pair of tailored trousers is a must-have for any woman’s wardrobe. Tailored pants will give you a polished look. Make sure the hemline is correct.

Pumps

In my opinion “Pumps” must  the hardest pair of shoes to wear. However, when you get confident with your pumps you will be able to pair them with most of your outfits. In addition, a pair of pumps will add length to your legs.  If you are afraid of a  high heel buy a “Kitty Heel”. You hardly realize that you are wearing heels at all. And.. they are totally in style. If you go for a nude pair, it will elongate your legs even more and they can be worn with any outfit. Dress them up or down.

Brenton Shirt

We all have seen it, I even owned a couple. I made myself a note to repurchase it. Everybody seems to love the horizontal blue and white striped shirts. Why? Maybe it is the inherent Frenchness. The shirt is mostly synonymous with the Parisian chic look. It has and had a large crowd of fans such as Picasso, James Dean, Brigitte Bardot, Coco Chanel, the Duchess of Cambridge, Alexa Chung, Madonna, etc. Initially designed for the French Navy as the official uniform for seamen. Coco Chanel was inspired by the look in 1917 and voilá, we have an undisputed wardrobe staple.

Sneakers

Sneakers are comfortable and practical. They get you from point A to point B. They look stylish with just about any outfit. Pair them with a sundress, a pair of jeans, a pencil skirt, etc. etc. The fashion-sneakers are on-trend and are available in various styles. All white, platform, 80’s retro, Dad sneakers, etc.

Designer Purse

In thirty-plus years, I have not bought a bag. Quality indeed lasts and lasts. My designer purses lasted for decades, and I still enjoy them, and most importantly, they always look great. Today we live in a “”disposable”” society. We are familiar with stores like H&M, Walmart, Forever 21and many more. Although the designs can be trendy, they don’t last. Secondly, most of them are produced in sweatshops and end up in a landfill.

Consequently, I believe in high-quality fashions because, if well taken care of, they continue to last for decades. I am not shallow or greedy, and I definitely have to save for the items I want to acquire. If you can’t afford one, because they are pricey, buy a used one on e-bay, Poshmark, or any good consignment store.

Why is Fashion Important to Us?

That is the million-dollar question. Most importantly, we want to be fashionable, we must remember that fashion has to be stylish or fit our personality. I was raised in the fashion industry. At an early age, I saw my mother styling each designer piece for each client.  You too, can  be successful developing your “personal style.” Style is the dot on the “i” of a fashion piece. Firstly, style is the key; however, without fashion, which is the vehicle to carry out our style, we are left with nothing. Fashion with style does not date. However,  fashion without style dates very quickly. Fashion is a trend! -What’s hot right now? Consequently, it inspires and influences us.

Fashion is important to me because  I have an appreciation of beauty and style. I hope that you enjoyed this post and that you were able to apply some tips to your personal style. Any questions and/or comments would be greatly appreciated. We all can learn something from each other. Take care and have a great rest of the week.

Heidi
